Sedation for Children Q & A

What is sedation for children?

Having a dental procedure can be scary for children. A dentist needs a child to remain still and calm, but it's only natural for children to wriggle around and become anxious. This type of experience not only makes it difficult for their provider to treat them but can also leave a lasting negative impression.

Sedation for children is a safe procedure that puts children into a calm state or may even render them entirely unconscious if necessary, depending on the procedure they're having.

A Smile 4 U offers several child sedation methods to help your child have a wonderful experience, no matter what treatment they need.

What is IV sedation for children?

A Smile 4 U offers intravenous (IV) sedation for children, or "twilight sedation.” This type of sedation puts your child into a comfortable twilight-sleep state, where they drift in and out of consciousness throughout the procedure.

The IV sedation is administered by a trained anesthesiologist, who remains present the entire time. They place a small needle into the back of your child's hand, connected to an intravenous tube through which the anesthesia flows. The goal is to introduce the least amount of medication necessary to create a calm enough state to complete the procedure. At any time, an antidote can be introduced into the IV line to reverse the effects of the medicine.

Your child remains calm throughout and, in most cases, won't remember anything about the experience afterward.

What is nitrous oxide sedation for children?

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a sweet-smelling gas that puts a child into a dreamy state while reducing any pain. It's the safest sedation method, which makes it ideal for children — your child continues to breathe unaided throughout and remains in full control of their bodily functions.

A reason for nitrous oxide's popularity is that your child’s dentist can easily control the level of sedation, and it gets to work within just two to three minutes. It also has no side effects on the heart or lungs. The dentist places a mask over your child's nose and encourages them to take deep breaths. Your child smells a pleasant aroma and begins to feel sleepy.

Sedation ensures your child receives the dental treatment they need while experiencing only calm, friendly care. Call A Smile 4 U to learn more or request an appointment online.
